The Community Grocer

The Community Grocer is a weekly open fruit and vegetable market at 510 Lygon Street in Carlton. It was started in October 2014, and provides access for over 130 people living in public housing to fresh and affordable food. The market has over 30 fruit and vegetables available, and to date has sold more than 400 watermelons and 1200kg of tomatoes. The Community Grocer also provides a free weekly vegetarian BBQ which provides the opportunity for customers to meet and share a meal together. The Community Grocer is a social enterprise that currently employs two staff and relies upon the generosity of a dedicated team of volunteers. We would like to see The Community Grocer expanded to an additional site which will help to minimise waste and make the market more sustainable and financially viable into the future.

The Nappy Collective

The Nappy Collective Inc. (TNC) is a community based not for profit charity based in Melbourne. Harnessing the power of collective giving, The Nappy Collective run bi annual national campaigns to collect left over unused disposable nappies which are then distributed to organisations that support families in crisis and victims of family violence at a critical time. To assist in funding TNC's operations we wish to create a social enterprise selling baby giftware. Using recycled fabrics, and manufactured here in Melbourne in partnership with The Social Studio, our pilot product will be a nappy wallet. Our nappy wallet is very functional, great for keeping baby essentials at hand and for keeping the nappy bag organised. It is also useful to throw into your handbag for quick trips to the shops or the park, without needing to take a full and heavy nappy bag. With its cute design the nappy wallet could also be used for many others purposes, such as a make up bag, for jewelry, stationary and art supplies, pencil case or even as an everyday clutch.

Whilst very simple, this nappy wallet will not only be a great gift but it will carry a lot of meaning. Parenting is hard enough without added pressures, our customers would use our nappy wallet proudly knowing that they are contributing to assist another parent.

Bright Sparks

Bright Sparks is a not-for-profit enterprise that will rescue small appliances to keep them out of landfill. From August 2015 Melburnians will have three new options:

  1. DONATE your unwanted or broken appliances to us, at our workshop or donation points throughout Melbourne. We’ll give them new life and sell them in our shop or donate them to people in need. Broken items will be repaired or recycled responsibly;
  2. REPAIR. If your appliance breaks and you want to keep it going, we’ll repair it for an affordable fee;
  3. BUY. We’ll sell good-as-new kitchen appliances, household appliances and electronics, as well as lamps that have been revamped – painted or fixed up with pre-loved fabrics. All products will be tested and tagged and come with a warranty.

Recipe4Change

Recipe4Change …. When we work together we can change lives. We are a team of like- minded food professionals working together to open a food space in the City of Melbourne to provide a workplace for job seekers of all abilities to learn and grow in a supportive and encouraging environment, where we celebrate who you are. We want to close the gap on food waste, unemployment and food insecurity. While looking for a suitable space, our first goal is to fund a van to collect edible food waste.
